The big change has been widely criticised since the trials of new self-serve checkouts began testing back in 2021.
The German supermarket had previously stated that it had “no plans” to bring the checkouts to Australian supermarkets.
In June 2021 trials began in selected stores around the country but were hit with wide-spread complaints such as they were too loud and mostly card only, it prompted social media users to jump on the internet and complain about the machines.

However, according to news.com.au the changes are being made so that the chain can keep grocery costs low for customers and also frees up staff allowing them to have a better focus on customer service among other things.
